Hmmm interesting. I also have casting resin but haven’t used it. What is the viscosity like compared to the others?
I really should get some more west systems just for skinning

How about skinning flexy, like real flexy decks, does the layers delaminates over time?
All the stuff I fixed with epoxy on my 15ply trampa did pop off over time because it’s just not flexing enough.
Flex problem maybe but adhesion problem also.
Polyester resin is better for flexy decks. Only delamination I have seen was my first attempt at putting epoxy over unsanded rustolen. I now use pigments in my epoxy instead of paint. Sanding the paint could have helped, first layer adhesion is crucial. I have chipped the casting resin not a lot of flex in it. So wouldnt attempt it on a flexible deck.
Hey all, im getting some epox resin for my Hummie deck and spoke to the locale surf-board shop and they they gave me a few recommendations, including this one (Polycraft Epolam 2017). Havent seen this brand used here, just wondering if it looks ok for my purposes?
Is that for aesthetic reasons? Thing is I was going to add some black pigmentation anyway, do you reckon would work to get rid of the amber?
It depends.
If it’s gonna be pigmented you won’t see much of the skin very well, it’ll probably just look black (depending on quantity of pigment you use).
Are you just skinning it for strength or also appearance/ aesthetics?
I hadn’t planned using a print/skin, just wanted a uniform colour. Using it for strength on the bottom and on the top it would just be layer of epoxy with frit, not with CF. As long as adding pigment will get rid of the amber tones im happy (and as long as the Epoxy I listed ticks all the other boxes) ill get it
Well if it’s tinted black, it will look black.
yeah, if it was only for aesthetic reasons glyphics said it wasnt good then thats fine cos i can change that with pigment etc, just wanted to know if the rest of the product spec looks ok
No expert on that sorry. Looks ok from the product info. Says the right sort of stuff. If colour no issue, give it a go.
Just about appearance: If you tint it black, depending on pigment you may not see any of the carbon weave and it’s likely to look like paint… (but that’s ok )
yeah, im not too fussed about seeing the carbon weave.
Check out Pavel’s video on CF skinning take it with a grain of salt but he does have some good recommendations for epoxy supply in the UK.
I wouldn’t use his technique unless you like wasting a week. If in doubt west systems 105 is the gold standard. It available pretty much everywhere.
thanks. yeah ive seen pavels vids, he uses West Systems. The one linked is half the price of WS and according to the guy I spoke to (technician at East Coast Fiberglass Suplies UK) who sells West Systems and a few other epoxy brands, this is one just as good. my only concern is the amber hue thing
With pigment it will be fine dude
music to my ears =D
This is some of the best epoxy I’ve ever used
Super low VOC, cures almost perfectly even if you do it right too.

ahh, i forgot to sand the carbon fiber layer of my hummie for before applying the first thin layer of epoxy…is it catastrophic if i dont now sand back the epoxy once it’s dry ? - i.e. will the epoxy just peel off CF if it isn’t sanded?
There is a very good chance that you won’t get a good bond.
